When Maradona signed for Newell’s he was asked, “Why did you choose Newell’s, Diego?”. He said: “Because the history of football is called Newell’s OId Boys”. Long before Messi emerged, Diego knew what this club stood for and what it would continue to represent. Later in time, after scoring Barcelona’s fourth goal in the 4-0 victory over Osasuna Messi would lift his shirt to reveal number ten Newell’s Old Boys shirt from the season Maradona spent there. The shirt was one that Maradona actually used during his spell with Newell’s and was given to Messi by an Argentine judge and collector named Sergio Fernandez.
